Womxn @ Work Panel

Rhode Island School of Design

Metcalf Auditorium

20 North Main Street

Providence, RI 02903

Drawing inspiration from RISD’s pioneering history, Womxn @ Work honors and amplifies the voices of womxn within our campus community—fostering discussion around their experiences as working professionals, creatives and innovators.

Womxn @ Work takes the form of a photography exhibit celebrating the spirit, resilience and achievements of seven remarkable RISD community members. Through these evocative portraits, the exhibition captures the diverse tapestry of talent, determination and creativity we find in the modern working world.

By spotlighting these individuals, we pay homage to RISD’s visionary founders. Womxn @ Work is a platform for womxn’s voices and experiences and, through interactive elements and storytelling techniques, an inclusive space for dialogue, reflection and education.

READING

RISD Auditorium

17 Canal Walk

Providence, RI 02903

In its 30th year, the annual Langston Hughes Community Poetry Reading remains the must-see opening destination into Black History Month events throughout Rhode Island.

On Sunday, February 2nd, 2025, we will again have a legacy celebration of poems from the international icon with Rhode Island ties, the late Langston Hughes. Hughes’ reach transcends well beyond being the writer and voice of the Harlem Renaissance.

The year’s milestone poetry reading will focus on his work as the poet of our times. His writings and poems play an important role – as can all forms of art – in teaching equity, being a natural conduit for necessary, heal-inducing conversations, and for bringing an audience diverse in ages, races, backgrounds, occupations, and beliefs together.

It is no wonder that our annual poetry reading gatherings do the same with hundreds from all over Rhode Island in attendance. Led by co-Directors April Brown and Kai Cameron, the work that the committee of dedicated members do all year long, including our art advocacy, curriculum for youth, and youth showcase, are necessary – even more so now.

The readers are also going to be a diverse group, including students, community/business leaders, artists, entrepreneurs, teachers, parents and Rhode Island School of Design’s 18th President Crystal Williams, an award-winning poet and essayist in her own right. Rhode Island Poet Laureate Colin Channer will also read a poem commissioned just for this momentous occasion. On hand to accompany them will be the Leland Baker Trio led by Leland Baker, a jazz saxophonist and music educator who has lived and spent time honing his craft in the great cities of New Orleans, New York City and here in Rhode Island.

The festivities will also include a performance from Astro Mama; a silent auction with items to bid on such as Harlem Renaissance-era collectibles, an Ida B. Wells doll and a mixed media piece from world renowned artist, recent Pell Award recipient Bob Dilworth; and a surprise or two.

The 1-3PM always entertaining and joyous event will be held in the RISD Auditorium, 17 Canal Walk, Providence. It is free and open to the public. In addition to RISD, sponsors and grant partners include the Providence Human Relations Commission, the Rhode Island Foundation, United Way of Rhode Island, Secretary of State Gregg Amore, and the Rhode Island Black Storytellers.
